A dual that started as well as possible for the Bison unraveled quickly as North Dakota State fell to the University of Iowa this afternoon in the featured bout of the Iowa City Duals. Bison freshman Paul Bianchi scored the lone victory of the day for NDSU by fall over Iowa’s Justin Stickley in 1:57. Bianchi scored a quick takedown and then locked up a cradle on Stickley’s standup attempt for the fall.
From there, the Bison lost the final nine matches of the bout, with five of the nine coming via bonus for the ninth ranked Hawkeyes. NDSU was without 133 pound NCAA qualifier Cameron Sykora, and instead bumped 125 Tirso Lara to that weight. Giving up quite a bit of size, Lara was defeated by Iowa’s Phil Laux via technical fall 15-0.
The marquee matchup of the afternoon between NDSU’s #13 ranked Clay Ream and #3 Michael Kemerer of Iowa was dominated by the Hawkeye. Kemerer scrambled for an early 6-0 lead on a takedown and cradle for 4 nearfall. He went on to a dominating 18-2 technical fall.
At 165, Bison Andrew Fogarty was unable to find his offense in a 3-2 loss to Kaleb Young. Tyler McNutt took a 4-3 lead over Iowa’s Mitch Bowman, but Bowman finished with a takedown and rideout to score a 5-4 win.
NDSU’s lone Iowan in the lineup, 197 Cordell Eaton, was defeated by #11 Cash Wilcke 5-3.
