South Border made quite the statement Friday and Saturday in Linton. The Mustangs, led by champion Mark Jochim and Jake Herr, ran up 241.5 team points and ran away with the Linton Holiday team title. The Mustangs placed nice wrestlers in the top six and outpaced second place Carringotn by 84.5 points. Jochim dominated through the 152 pound bracket, scoring three falls including a second period title match pin over Des Lacs/Burlington’s Walter Winkler. Herr edged undefeated Michael Clifton of Carrington 4-3 in one of the feature bouts of the finals.
Second place Carrington boasted three champions. Treston and Brecken Lura scored titles at 113 and 132 respectively. Treston with an 8-4 win over Cole Gerhardt of New Salem/Almont and Brecken 9-3 over Grant Schneider of South Border. Tate Hoggarth edged Easton Ogren of Kindred 6-4 in overtime to remain an undefeated 24-0 on the year.
Just behind Carrington in third was Hettinger. The Night Hawks were paced by third placed finishes from Cade Warbis and Ezra Weichmann.
New Salem/Almont’s Wyatt Engwitch won the 106 pound bracket with a 13-7 win over Mason Mellmer of Beulah/Hazen.
Kindred state champion Carter Schmitz upended Ethan Wonser of Williams County 6-2 in the final at 126.
#1 138 Chandler Nagel of Linton/HMB remains undefeated 15-0 after a major decision finals victory over Keyton Meiers of Stanley.
Freshman Garrett Hebl of LaMoure is also still unbeaten. Hebl defeated Ethan Hammons of New Salem/Almont 4-1
Also undefeated and untested are Corbin Okeson of Bishop Ryan and Coy Spooner of Des Lacs/Burlington. Okeson defeated Ethan Carruth of EEK 12-4, while Spooner pinned EEK’s Bridger Mathern in the first period.
Peyton Gruenfelder of Napoleon continued his hot streak with another victory over Ethan Ellingson of EEK.
Keegan Henjum of Bishop Ryan capped the champions with a third period fall over Nate Boehm of Bowman County/Beach.
