It was a fantastic week for Team North Dakota at the U16 and Junior national championships, and Bismarck’s Matt Kaylor put a bow in it Friday afternoon with a fourth place finish in the Junior Greco-Roman 195 pound division. Kaylor, who will compete at the University of Mary in the fall, was beaten in the semifinals by California’s Artem Logimov 11-6. Kaylor held strong position in that bout but Logimov’s two four-point arm spins proved too much to overcome. In the consolation semifinals, Kaylor rebounded to defeat Denzel Mabry of California 6-1. Kaylor was then defeated by Isaac Trumble of Nebraska 14-8 in the third place bout.
Overall, the home state crowned two national champions in Wilfried and Christian Tanefeu, had a double All American in Bismarck sophomore Isaiah Huus, and scattered All American finishes across all four of the styles and age divisions. While Kyle Burwick and Matt Kaylor are moving on to college, the Tanefeu brothers, Huss, and freestyle All American Noah Savageau will all return to Fargo looking to add hardware next season.
