North Dakota products Noah Savageau (Bismarck), Kyle Burwick (Hettinger), and Matt Kaylor (Bismarck) navigated through day one of the Junior National Freestyle Championships undefeated Sunday. Burwick, seeded first at 126 pounds, won four consecutive matches by a combined score of 41-0. Only Illinois’ Brody Norman pushed Burwick through to the second period. Burwick will wrestle Angelo Rini of Ohio in tomorrow’s quarterfinals.
At 195, Kaylor scored three victories including a technical fall, a 19-16 thriller over Maryland’s Xavier Doolin, and a fall in 3:46 in the round of 16. Kaylor will wrestle Ethan Hatcher of Ohio tomorrow morning in the quarterfinals.
In the 100 pound weight bracket, Noah Savageau scored consecutive technical falls over Illinois and Iowa opponents. Savageau will wrestle top seed Daniel Sheen of Illinois tomorrow morning.
Alive on the consolation side for Team North Dakota is Louis DeCoteau of Belcourt. DeCoteau scored a 9-6 decision over Austin Thorton of Texas before falling to nationally #1 ranked Braxton Amos of West Virginia. DeCoteau will wrestle Indiana’s Garrett Sandefur Monday morning.
