Both Minot State national qualifiers dropped their opening round bouts at the Division II NCAA Wrestling Championships. Beaver 141 Jered Sublet led 6-5 late in his match with #8 Jared Donahue of Wheeling Jesuit, but Donahue was awarded an escape in a scramble situation with not time left on the clock. Minot State head coach Evan Forde emphatically challenged the call, but after review the refs confirmed and sent the match to overtime. In overtime, Donahue was awarded a quick two point takedown to get the 8-6 victory.
At 285, #7 Jordan Will had a disastrous first period and though he wrestled strong the remainder of the match, was unable to recover and fell 7-4. Will’s Opponent, Greg Wilson of Central Oklahoma, scored a quick takedown to start the bout and then tilted Will for four near fall. Will found an escape to end the first period, but only after Wilson had racked up over 2:00 of riding time. From there, Will pushed the action and scored another escape plus two stalling point, but was unable to get back into the match.
Both Minot State grapplers will wrestle in tonights first round of wrestle backs.
