Mary’s Barnhardt Advances to NCAA Quarterfinals

\The score was tight early, but Mary’s #4 Tate Barnhardt got the job 4-0 over Newberry (SC) 133 Timmy Martinez.  In doing so, Barnhardt advances to tonight’s quarterfinal round against #5 Tanner Hitchcock of Lindenwood.  Neither Barnhardt or Martinez was able to score in the first period, but Barnhardt escaped quicky after taking down to start the second and the scored a takedown to make the score 3-0 after the second.  Barnhardt rode Martinez for the entirety of the third to grab a riding time point and finish 4-0.

Mary’s 174 Phil Springsteen won his pigtail match with Matt Pratt of Maryville via fall in 2:40, but Springsteen was unable to get past #1 and undefeated Brandon Supernaw of Western Colorado.  Springsteen scored the first takedown and then rode Supernaw for the entirety of the first period; racking up over two minutes of riding time.  Supernaw chose neutral in the second and scored two takedowns to take a 4-3 lead into the third.  Springsteen took top in the third and was able to gain back the riding time advantage and effectively even the score, but things fell apart with about 1:00 left on the clock.  Supernaw scored a clasping call and escape, plus takedown  to finish the bout 9-4.

Mary 285 Lalo Jaime was eliminated from the tournament in the first session.  Jaime dropped his opening round pigtail via fall in 3:39.  In his pigtail wrestleback, Jaime was also pinned.  This time in the third period via tilt to Derek Berberek of Shippensburg.
