Dickinson Topples Bismarck For State Dual Title

dzfp9vfwwaa1md8.jpgTwo weeks ago Bismarck High defeated Dickinson 37-30 to grab the West Region regular season dual crown and top seed at the state tournament.  Dickinson reversed that result in the state finals, winning seven matches and getting gutty efforts from everyone in the lineup.  The Midgets took an early 15-0 lead on the strength of a decision and two pins, but the Demons countered right back with three wins of their own to make the dual score 15-14 entering the 120 pound bout.  Dickinson’s Brendan Johnson, who was up at 126 the last time the two teams met, took the mat and defeated Brock Fettig 6-5 to extend the Dickinson lead to 18-14.  Bismarck then showed their trademark depth and bumped unattached 120 Kaden Renner to 126.  Renner scored an 11-1 major decision and knotted the dual score at 18. Renner’s insertion into the lineup allowed the Demons to bump 126 pound state state finalist Laken Boese to 132 and a matchup with #2 Jaron Berger.  The bump paid off, as Boese defeated Berger 6-2 and gave the Demons their first lead of the match, 21-18.  At 138, Dickinson’s Troy Berg knotted the dual score again with a 6-0 decision over Preston Fettig.  Demon three-time state champion Ryan Ripplinger moved up to 145 and gave the Demons the lead right back, but Dickinson’s Matthew Meschke was able to battle for six minutes and hold Ripplinger to a major decision.  Ahead 25-21, Bismarck got their last win of the evening when Brandt Kringlie defeated Dexter Carpenter in overtime.  Like Meschke, Carpenter’s ability to keep a Bismarck hammer at bay in a loss was the difference in the dual.  Down 28-21, Tate Nordby shrugged off a disappointing semifinal bout on the individual side and made the dual score 28-26 with an 18-3 technical fall victory over Cullen Glatt.  Needing just a decision at 170 to win the dual, Dickinson senior Caleb Usher pinned Jordan Schmidt in 3:27 and sealed the deal.  It is the first state dual championship for Dickinson High.
