Mary redshirt sophomore Phil Springsteen has rebounded after a slow start to the season. Springsteen, who missed November recovering from an injury and was beaten by Northern’s Paxton Mewes in dual competition last Thursday, won the 174 pound bracket at the Midwest Classic in Indianapolis, IN, Saturday. Springsteen recorded three falls in a row before needing overtime to dispose of #9 Caydon Whitaker of Indianapolis in the semifinals. Springsteen started fast in that match, scoring a takedown early in the first period and then racking up over two and a half minutes of riding time. In the finals, Springsteen defeated Bismarck native Adam Blees 3-0. Springsteen and Blees were both fantastic throughout the two-day tournament. Unranked coming in, both should jump into the top eight in the country.
Mary’s lone other placer was #8 ranked 133 Tate Barnhardt, who finished third. Barnhardt was beaten in the semifinals 5-4 by Darek Huff of Adams State. Barnhardt took a 4-2 lead into the third period of that bout, but was reversed and ridden for the entirity of the third period. Huff’s riding time point decided the bout after time.
Northern State’s Billy Holtan was fifth at 165.
