Hettinger Four-time North Dakota state champion Kyle Burwick has made his college decision. Arguably the best wrestler in the history of small town North Dakota is headed to the University of Wisconsin, where he will join new head coach Chris Bono. Bono, who made the move to Wisconsin after previously leading South Dakota State, is assisted by NCAA champions Jon Reader and Matt McDonough. McDonough is of particular relevance to Burwick’s commitment, as he was a two-time NCAA champion for the University of Iowa at 125 pounds. Berwick projects as a 125 at the college level. Since the Bono hire, Wisconsin has also made massive gains within the Badger Regional Training Center. Last spring Wisconsin native and Olympian Ben Askren was hired as the Badger RTC head coach.
Burwick was the best kept secret in North Dakota before bursting on to the national scene by finishing undefeated at Freestyle Junior Duals in June. He then went on to grab a fourth place finish at USA Wrestling Junior nationals in Fargo. The Hettinger native will look to become the fourth five-time North Dakota Class B state champion next March before heading to Wisconsin.
