After falling to the wrestlebacks in the round of 32 5-0 to Pennsylvania’s Dylan Reinert, Napoleon 2X state champion Garrett Jangula reeled off six consolation wins to finish in the top six and grab All American honors at National High School Coaches Association Sophomore Nationals. Jangula, who went undefeated this season for the Imperials, won three matches on the backside of the bracket via pin, and also had two major decisions. After securing All American honors, Jangula advanced to the consolation semifinals with a 2-0 over Trevor Christian of Missouri. Jangula scored an early takedown and ride out in that bout, and was able to control the match the rest of the way without scoring again for the win. In the consolation semi, Jangula was defeated 8-2 by Jaziah Whaley Jr of Colorado. JT Stinson of California pinned Jangula in the fifth place match after Jangula took an errant shot and gave up a cradle.
Two other North Dakota state champion wrestlers, Minot’s Kelby Armstrong and Bismarck’s Devin Steidler, were forced to default from the tournament with injuries. Armstrong injured his wrist in the All American wrestle back round, and Steidler injured his shoulder in the Round of 16. Both had strong showings before ultimately defaulting.
