It was a roller coaster hour for Minot State rs senior Mitch Eull. An hour after being beaten in the quarterfinals 6-3 by Terrance Fanning of Wheeling Jesuit, Eull defeated NSIC foe Lawrence Phillips 2-0 to grab All American honors through the backside of the bracket. Eull is Minot State’s first All American since the school reinstated its wrestling program.
After Eull won his first round bout this morning, Fanning proved too strong offensively in the quarterfinals. Eull kept the match close into the third period in spite of a 2-0 takedown deficit with strong bottom work, but Fanning found a third takedown with thirty seconds left in the bout to grab All American honors.
With a quick turnaround against a familiar opponent, Eull found enough in the tank to defeat Phillips for the third time this season. In tomorrow morning’s wrestle back round, Eull matches up with Jarrod Hinrichs of Nebraska-Kearney. The winner of that bout guarantees himself a top six finish.
