Both Minot State’s coach Evan Forde and Mary coach Adam Aho have their first national qualifiers. Beaver Mitch Eull and and Marauder Jared Reis are headed to nationals after a grueling two-day Super Region Central tournament in St. Cloud. Eull, a senior from Buffalo, MN won his title with a 3-1 sudden victory win over Jacob Borgmeyer of Lindenwood. The two heavyweights got into a back and forth scramble in the neutral overtime period that ended with a single leg score for Eull. The championship means that Eull will wrestle a fourth place finisher from another region at NCAA’s and would not meet another region’s champion until the semifinals. In the semifinals of this tournament, Eull scored his second win of the season over Saint Cloud’s Lawrence Phillips. Eull broke a 1-1 deadlock in overtime with a takedown on Phillips.
At 157, Mary’s Jared Reis lost in the quarterfinals to tournament champion Ryan Strope of McKendree 6-4, but came back and won four matches in a row to take third place. For third, Reis defeated St. Cloud’s Larry Bomstad 4-3. Down 3-2 with 40 seconds remaining, the Napoleon native found an ankle pick from a right side underhook for two, and then rode Bomstad out to end it. Bomstad is currently ranked third in the nation.
The NCAA championships are in Cedar Rapids, IA March 9-10.
