Minot State scored five wins Saturday afternoon against Southwest Minnesota State, but the Beavers didn’t garner enough bonus in their victories to get the dual win.
Dean Arevalo and Marco Antonio Ramirezlazos started the Beavers off on the right track with decision victories, but Southwest’s Trent Butcher scored a first period fall at 141 to knot the dual score at six. Butcher’s fall came over Velva state champion Jeseb Mogen. Justin Haneke followed Butcher’s fall with a fall of his own to extend Southwest’s lead to 12-6, but Minot State then scored two more decisions to again knot the dual score; this time at 12. Zach Berry won a 4-2 decision over Cortez Arredondo at 157 and Carlos Toledano defeated Kegan Fingalsen 6-1 at 165.
Southwest captured the lead for good with three wins in a row from Griffin Osing, Cole Hennen, and Jackson Ryan. Mitch Eull then continued his recent tear for the Beavers with 15-0 technical fall over Ben Thompson.
Head Coach Evan Forde has been happy with what he is getting out of his senior leader in his final semester of competition.
“MItch is staying focused on the process and even though this is his last month of wrestling, he is trying to improve on the little things,” Forde noted to NDwrestle. “His success is because of that and the fact that he is a smart wrestler and makes very few mistakes.”
Minot State’s next NSIC dual is next Friday at Mary, a match Forde is excited for after taking a tight loss back to the Marauders back in November.
“We are very focused on our rival school and it is a match we want to win,” Forde stated “We split 5-5 last match and need to make up bonus points or find that sixth win. We are excited for what should be a great dual meet.”
