Moorhead 174 Adam Blees took a loss in his first match in the Elite division of the UNK Holiday Inn Open on Saturday. Blees was defeated by University of Nebraska super-freshman Mickey Labriola by fall in 3:38. A 32-man bracket meant Blees would need four wins in a row against some of the best Division II competition in the nation to place. The Bismarck native did one better than that, winning five matches in a row before being shut down in the third place match by the new NCAA six-match limit. In that stretch, Blees won one major decision, on technical fall, and three one-point decisions. In his last two bouts of the day, Blees knocked off Bruno Niccoletti (Central Oklahoma) and Miguel Barreras (Central Oklahoma), both of whom are currently ranked in the top 12 nationally by Intermat. The impressive showing should be enough for Blees to shove his way into the 174 pound national rankings moving forward.
Adam Blees’s place is 4th and has scored 12.00 team points.
