After finishing second in the Cadet age division earlier this week, Sophie Smith went from 117 to 122 pounds and entered the Junior division where she finish sixth. Smith won in the consolation quarterfinals last night to ensure a top six finish, but dropped both matches she wrestled today. The first by 10-0 technical superiority to Cheyenne Sisenstein of New York, and the second 7-0 to Marisol Nugent of Maine.
Smith has paved quite the path for future North Dakota women by becoming the first female to leave Fargo with All American plaques in two divisions. Team North Dakota also made big Fargo gains this year overall. North Dakota women’s director Bill Smith entered seven women to compete for the state over the course of the week. That is the most North Dakota has ever entered for Fargo, and though Sophia was the only girl to leave with hardware, the experience was one that should benefit these ladies in the future.
