In what became a two team race to the finish, Carrington edged Pembina Conty North 219-204 to grab the Region 2 Individual Team Championship Saturday in Mayville.  After an up and down season, the Carrington Cardinals seem to be peaking at the right time.  Head Coach Josh Kerbaugh’s squad won the Region 2 dual title last week, and finally has a championship caliber lineup on the mat following a lot of graduation losses from last year’s state championship team.  Carrington placed five wrestlers into the Region finals and left the gymnasium with three champions.  At 126, state champion Lucas Geiszler pinned his way through the tournament, dropping PCN’s Gage Litton at 3:03.  Geiszler will be the one seed next week in Fargo opposite New Salem-Almont sophomore Chauncey Dittus.  A top seed is also in order for 285 Bradee Schroeder.  Schroeder hasn’t lost to Class B competition since returning to the Cardinal lineup after Christmas, and is possibly the biggest favorite to win a state title next weekend.  Carrington’s third champion, 138 Zach Broadwell, seems back to form after missing a large part of January while in the concussion protocol.  He defeated Mayport-CG’s Ben Berdal 11-5.  Runners-up for the Cardinals were Brecken Lura (106), Austin Hendrickson (132), Brady Davis (152), and Jarret Bauer (182).  Carrington qualified 12 wrestlers for the state tournament.

Second place Pembina County North was paced by four champions and two runners-up.  Winning titles for the Grizzlies were Tanner Urlaub (132), Brett Verville (145), Tristen Sott (152), and Carter Brown (182). Back at 132 after wrestlign much of January at 138, Urlaub scored an important 9-3 decision over Carrington’s Austin Hendrickson in a match that will have big seeding implications.  Brett Verville needed extra time to do so, but was able to score a fall over Grafton’s Hector Reyes in 6:41.  With only one loss on the season, Carter Brown continued his dominance over 182 pound opponents, winning both his matches by fall in just over two minutes of mat time.  Runners-up for the Grizzliers were Gage Litton (126), Austin Urlaub (170), and Bradyn Lafferty (285).

Hillsboro-Central Valley was third and got titles from Kyle Alfson (106) and the Hastings brothers.  Having wrestled 152 for most of the season, senior 2X state champion Luke Hastings chose to move up one weight class and wrestle the individual state tournament at 160.  Hastings made quick work of Grafton’s Noah Flores in the finals, winning by fall in 1:10.  Possibily the toughest Class B regional weight class in the state was won by younger brother Mark Hastings at 170.  Hastings navigated through a bracket that included three of the top five wrestlers in the state, and scored a fall over PCN’s Austin Urlaub in the title match.  Hastings is likely to draw the second seed a the state tournaemnt behind Lisbon’s Jordan Urbach.  

By all acounts, Grafton had an impressive tournament, grabbing individual titles from Austin Thompson (120), and Jose Martinez (195), and qualifying seven wrestlers total for the state tournament,  Thompson and Martinez are state finalist contenders at their respective weights for the Spoilers.

Central Cass also won two individual region titles on the day, with fantastic performances from Andrew Volk (113) and Cade Merrigan (220).  Volk continues to have great success this season while the focus of the 113 pound weight class is on other parts of the state.  Volk will likely come into the state tournament seeded sixth or lower, but should not be slept on.
