Preseason Nationals Preview

North Dakota will be sending nine total athletes to the 2020 USA Wrestling Brian Keck Memorial Preseason Nationals this weekend in Des Moines, Iowa. These nine wrestlers include Joshua Worral, Stetson Gisselback, Chase Clemenson, Jack Clemenson, Koye Grebel, William Ward, Danny Monatukwa, Nathan Schauer, and Jayden Haake.

Jack Clemenson (Fargo, ND; Unattached) will be the youngest competitor for North Dakota in the Boys 3rd & 4th Grade Division at 71lbs. Clemson who is an 8U Freestyle and Greco ND State Champion and won a Greco 10U State Championship in South Dakota this summer looks to improve on his 1-2 performance from last years tournament. There are 32 wrestlers registered for the Boys 3rd & 4th Grade 71lbs. division. In the Boys 5th & 6th Grade Division ND will have Chase Clemenson (Fargo, ND; Bison Wrestling Club). Chase is an Intermediate Freestyle & Greco ND State Champion and is a Gopher State Nationals Champion. Chase like Jack also went 1-2 at last years Brian Keck Memorial Preseason Nationals.

In the Middle School Boys (7th & 8th Grade only) Division ND will have Stetson Gisselbeck (West Fargo, ND; Bison Wrestling Club) at 102lbs. and William Ward at 165lbs. (West Fargo, ND; Unattached). Stetson, who has 12U Freestyle and Folkstyle ND State Titles on his resume, went 0-2 at last year’s tournament. Ward is a 2019 12U ND Triple Crown and has competed and won and placed at many National Tournaments. At last year’s tournament Ward was able to capture All American status and made it all the way to the finals. Hopefully, Ward can see the same success at this year’s tournament and earn ND a Preseason National Champion.

In the Highschool 9th-10th grade (only) Division North Dakota fans will see Koye Grebel (Valley City, ND; Express Wrestling Club) and Jayden Haake (Grand Forks, ND; Grand Forks Gladiators Wrestling Club). Koye was a 106lbs Class A State Finalist last year as a freshman. Haake who was also a freshman last season lost in the blood round in the Class A state tournament at 126lbs. We will see Grebel back in stride at 106lbs. for this tournament but Haake has grown quiet a bit. Grebel will have to battle through a deep field with 103 boys registered at 106. It will be fun to see the kind of competition Grebel can find for himself in Iowa. Haake will see a 160lbs. bracket with 32 competitors.

For the High School 11th-12th grade (only) Division we will see Danny Monatukwa (Ellendale, ND; Garlington Training Center), Joshua Worral (Fargo, ND; Tech Team Wrestling Club), and Nathan Schauer (Ashley, ND; Unattached). Monatukwa is a 3-time ND Class A state placer for the Fargo North Spartans and went 1-2 at last years Preseason Nationals. He will be wrestling in a 77-man bracket. Joshua Worral who is also a Fargo North Spartan was an East Region Champion last season and suffered an injury in the second round of the state tournament that kept him from making his way onto the podium. We will get to see Worral in a 79-man bracket. Nathan Schauer is a 2-time Class B state placer and was a 195lbs. State Finalist last season for the South Border Mustangs. We will get to see Schauer back at 195lbs. for this tournament. Schauer will see a 33-man field at 195lbs.

By the end of the weekend expect to see ND have at least four Preseason National All- Americans. If he didn’t have such a deep bracket I would say that Koye Grebel would be my favorite for earning AA honors for ND but because that is the case my guess is that we will be seeing William Ward back on the podium this year due to his past success. I also believe that if you catch them on the right day any of the three 11th-12th grade wrestlers could find a place on the podium. My guess is that Schauer will more than likely see the most success of those three.
