It seems that year after year, the biggest question mark in the NDSU lineup is 141 pounds. Expect 2019-20 to be no different. Last year, Sawyer Degen finished the season at 141 for the Bison and went 1-2 at the Big 12 tournament, but Degen is now down to 133. Last year’s 141 to begin the season, Gavin Sutton, is no longer on the roster. That will likely leave a competion for the spot between Junior Sam Hampton and Redshirt freshman Dylan Droegemueller. Hampton didn’t take the mat last year, but was 5-6 in limited action as a freshman. Droegemueller was 10-3 in his redshirt season.

Jaden Van Maanen should be the guy here as he was solid in the same role last season for the Bison. As a freshman, Van Maanen was 15-13 overall and 8-8 in dual competition. Van Maanen is capable of scoring a lot of points, but will need to get a bit more stingy defensively to take the next step and get into the national qualifier conversation. At the Big 12 tournament, Van Maanen went 0-2. Also a sophomore, Austin Braun enters this season after going 2-2 last year and 7-10 the year before as a redshirt.
Keep an eye on true freshman Michael Weber of Forsyth, MT. Weber’s older brother Luke was solid for the Bison the second half of last season after transferring fro Nebraska. Michael Weber was a four-time Montana state champion and Cadet double national champion. Weber has the skills to make a run at the lineup when the time is right.
