U of Jamestown’s JESSE MURILLO QUALIFIES FOR NAIA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

ORANGE CITY, Iowa— Jesse Murillo (FR/El Paso, Texas) finished third in the 141-pound division of the Great Plains Athletic Conference tournament/NAIA Great Plains Qualifier, earning a trip to the NAIA National Championship in March.

Murillo went 3-1 on the day and earned one of the GPAC’s three bids in the 141-pound weight class. He won an 11-8 decision over Zac Charity of Hastings, then was pinned by Midland’s David Berg in the semifinals. Murillo came back with a 10-6 decision over Cole Mills of Northwestern, then won an 18-15 decision over Cameron Devers of Concordia in the third place match.

Matt Hernandez (SR/Kenosha, Wis.) placed third at 184 pounds, winning three of his four matches on the day. He defeated Northwestern’s Bennett Sikkink by 5-3 decision in the third place match.

Chumkar Dhaliwal was fourth at 285 pounds, finishing 3-2. Devon Lyle (SR/San Lorenzo, Calif.) (141) was fifth, and Josh Goeden (SO/Sitka, Alaska) (197) placed sixth.

The GPAC also has three at-large bids for wrestlers who did not automatically qualify, and the Jimmies will find out early next week if any other wrestlers will join Murillo at nationals.
