Lisbon Leads New Salem After Day 1 of Class B Individual State Tournament

It was not a perfect day for Lisbon, but the Broncos still find themselves ahead of New Salem by six points going into tomorrow’s wrestleback and semifinal rounds.  The Broncos put seven of their ten qualified wrestlers through to the semifinals, including bonus point wins from Boeden Greenely (106), Caleb Nielsen (113), Jordan Sours (152), Sam Rieger (220), and Ben Shearer (285).  Jaden Schmidt, seeded sixth at 160, was upended in the first round by MayPort C/G’s Riley Thompson 10-5.

Second place New Salem/Almont, sitting just six points behind  Lisbon, gained steam before wrestling even started Thursday morning.  When a seeded wrester was forced to withdraw at 138 pounds, Holstein freshman Ethan Hammons was moved out of his unseeded slot and into the eight seed.  Hammons backed up the move with a first period pin before dropping a 5-0 decision to Rugby’s Riley Zachmeier in the quarterfinals.  Hammons will need one win tomorrow to get on the podium.  The Holsteins also got a nice sursprise in round one from Cole Gerhardt. Unseeded at 106, Cole Gerhardt scored a third period pin over Ellendale/Edgeley/Kulm’s #8 Isaiah Carruth, giving New Salem another boost.  In total, New Salem/Almont put five wrestlers through to the semifinals, and each wrestlers scored pins.  Clay Gerhardt (120), Tayt Wolding (132), Chauncey Dittus (145), Josh Irwin (152), and Isaiah Huss (182), will all look push through to the finals tomorrow evening.

Third place Central Cass sent five of their guys to the semifinals.  Jake Deutsch (106) and Cade Merrigan scored quarterfinal falls for the squirrels.

Carrington and South Border round out the top five with four semifinalists each.  Carrington’s 113 Treston Lura had to mount a furious comeback after giving up a reversal and back points to Hettinger/Scranton’s Gavin Dalley.  Lura sent the match to overtime late and then sealed the deal with a takedown in the one minute neutral period.

The lone unseeded wrestler to advance to the semifinals was Ellendale/Edgeley/Kulm’s Ethan Ellingson.  Ellingson, who finished third at the Region 1 tournament last weekend, will wrestle undefeated Coy Spooner of Des Lacs/Burlington in the semifinals.
