UMary Wrestling Takes Down MSU Moorhead 24-10 In Front Of A Packed House
BISMARCK, ND – The University of Mary wrestling team put on a show in front of a crowd of over 1,000 fans who came out to show support for the #24 Marauders. UMary didn’t disappoint the crowd, taking down MSU Moorhead by a score of 24-10, winning seven out of the ten bouts.
All ten matches on the night were won by either a decision or a major decision.
With the win the Marauders improve to 3-1 on the season and 1-1 in NSIC competition.
Nate Humann (125) kicked things off for the Marauders in a big way. The redshirt senior was named dude of the dual for his big 10-5 decision over #7 Cole Jones. Humann overcame a 4-1 deficit early in the first, rallying together eight straight points to take the victory.
On a night where two point takedown foam fingers were waving in the crowd, #6 Tate Barnhardt (133) put them to work recording seven takedowns in his bout against Seth Hutchison. The senior won by a 16-5 major decision.
In the 141 class MSUM’s Mason Schulz took down Hunter Eckert by a 7-0 decision.
Max Bruss (149) beat Dylan Connell by an 8-3 decision. Bruss and Connell entered the second period all squared up at three points a piece. Bruss then put together five straight points to clinch the win.
Braydon Ortloff took down Isaac Berger by a 20-8 major decision in the 157 lbs weight class.
In a low scoring affair, Austin Eichmann beat Justin Dravis by a 2-1 decision. Eichmann’s takedown in the first period proved to be enough to hold off his foe for the duration of the bout.
In the match of the night, #7 Phillip Springsteen (174) took down #10 Adam Blees by a 12-1 major decision. Springsteen dominated the match, jumping out to a 9-0 lead. The redshirt sophomore never looked back and proved that he is one of the best wrestlers in the country.
Lance Jarrett (184) recorded the Marauders third win by major decision on the night with his 10-1 victory over Evan Foster. The freshman only held a 2-1 lead going into the third period but he would put his foot on the gas and dominate the third period to take a win by major decision.
In the 197 lbs weight class Mitchell Kotschevar took down freshman Gabe Anderson by a 6-3 decision.
Gerardo Jaime (285) beat Jordan Magnuson by a 3-0 decision to round things out for the Marauders. Jaime posted a 2 point nearfall in the second period and an escape in the third to clinch the final bout of the night.
“I would describe tonight’s match as a grinding match, we had a lot of close individual matches where the guys showed up and we were kind of even” stated head coach Adam Aho “I was really proud of how we grinded out some wins which was what we’ve been missing this year so I’m really excited about the growth they’ve shown tonight.”
The Marauders will be back in action next week to take on the nations #1 St. Cloud State University. UMary will travel to St. Cloud to take on the Huskies on Saturday, January 19 at 2 PM.
