Two all-time North Dakota greats began their college seasons Sunday in open competition. Four-time Bismarck High state champion Ryan Blees, entering his senior season at Virginia Tech, was second at the Hokie Open in Blacksburg on Sunday. Blees won his first two bouts by major decision before upending Campbell’s Josh Heil 5-1 in the semifinals. In the finals, Blees ran into ACC foe Mitch Finesilver of Duke. Finesliver scored an early takedown and rode Blees for the entire first period before rolling to a 6-1 victory. Tech is off next weekend but will travel to the midwest for matches at Missouri and Northwestern on November 16 and 18.
Jordan Shearer of Nebraska finished fourth in the 149 pound weight bracket at the Warren/Williams Daktronics Open in Brooking, SD Sunday. Shearer finished in fourth place with a 3-2 record. On the top side, Shearer advanced to the quarters but was upended by 3-1 decision to Minnesota All American Tommy Thorn. In the third place match, Shearer was defeated by Minnesota star redshirt Brayton Lee 3-1. Shearer had previously defeated Lee earlier in the day. Nebraska will be at the Northeast Duals next weekend.
