The University of Mary’s incoming freshman class continues to grow as they have received a verbal commitment from Mandan two-time state champion Isaac Berger. Berger was a state champion this season at 152 pounds and projects as a college 157/165. During his senior season, Berger finished with a 46-4 record, with runner-up finishes at the Mandan Lions and Bismarck Rotary, as well as third place in Rapid City and at the Rumble on the Red.
Mandan High Head Coach Luke Mellmer believes his graduating athlete is a late bloomer, and really only starting to tap his actual potential on the mat.
“Isaac has always had success on the mat, so I don’t mean “late bloomer” in that sense,” Mellmer told NDwrestle. “Wrestling this past winter and spring, Isaac has gained a a greater love for the sport, and his priorities are where they need to be. If that continues, Isaac has a great shot at success at the next level.”
Berger will join an incoming class of 19 wrestlers at Mary, and his decision was based on where he think the coaching staff and athletes can take him.
“I think the coaching staff and teammates are going to benefit me to make me the most successful at the next level,” Berger stated.
