Bison Wrestling Club members show off their hardware after UWW Juniors
NDSU redshirt Brandon Metz added a second place finish in the UWW Junior national tournament Saturday to go with the third place finish from Greco Roman the day before. The three-time North Dakota State Champion won his semifinal Saturday morning 11-8 against Penn State signee Seth Nevills, but Metz fell in the final 18-8 to Iowa State redshirt Gannon Gremmel. In the final, Metz stormed out to an 8-0 lead in the first minute before Gremmel took compete control, reeling off 18 unanswered points for a technical fall victory. Many of Gremmel’s attacks went from two to four point maneuvers as Mets attempted to counter and exposed his own back. Bison 125 Paul Bianchi had a fantastic run to third place in a loaded 57 KG weight bracket. Bianchi’s lone loss came at the hands of runner-up Malik Heinselman, and he scored an impressive 17-8 win over Pennsylvania 4X state champion and Penn State recruit Gavin Teasdale. McGwire Midkiff and Jaden Van Maanen also placed for the Bison; Midkiff fifth at 61 KG and Van Maanen sixth at 70 KG.
The Bison also had a placer in the Senior Open division in Brent Fleetwood. Fleetwood, who joined the Bison last fall as a transfer from Central Michigan, was sixth place at 57 KG. Fleetwood’s finish qualifies him for the World Team Trials in Rochester, MN May 18-20.
