The talk of the tournament was again the matchup between multi time North Dakota State champions Ryan Ripplinger of Bismarck and Kyle Burwick of Hettinger/Scranton at 126. The two have now wowed fans in Lions title matches the last two years. Saturday, it was Burwick who got the best for Ripplinger, using savvy scores from the neutral position to grab an 8-6 decision. Ripplinger was able to stay in the match of the strength of his mat wrestling. Multiple times in the bout Ripplinger was able to reverse and ride Burwick to even the score following Burwick takedowns.
At 132, Adam DeBoer took a loss in pool play 3-1 to Mandan’s Ethan Fleck, but was able to navigate his way to the title anyway, defeating Dickinson’s Koletan Hafey 6-3. Devin Steidler made his mark in the 145 pound weight class with a fall in the finals over Mandan’s Koleton Reisenauer. Steidler is now 2-0 this season against the Mandan junior. Demon state finalists Chase Dockter and Parker Wahl were both upended by dominant South Dakota grapplers. At 170, Kolby Kost of Rapid City Central had pins in all but one of his seven bouts; winning by fall over Wahl in 2:50. Surges Brown’s Joel Carpenter had a similar day at 220. Carpenter pinned everyone, including Dockter in 2:49.
The story of the tournament (alongside Ripplinger-Burwick) was the title won by Legacy eighth grader Chance Davis. Davis defeated two two-time North Dakota state champions on his way to the title at 138 pounds. In pool play, Davis found himself down 6-2 to West Fargo’s JJ Harms, but was able to pin the senior in 3:12. Davis then beat Hettinger/Scranton’s Cale Schalesky 10-7 in the finals. Davis was name Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament. Legacy had two Lions champions for the first time in program history as Matt Kaylor defeated Ronald Wilkie of Turtle Mountain by fall to win the title at 195.
Century’s lone champion came at 285, where two Patriots navigated to the finals in point scorer Riley Roesler and unattached Konnor Stordalen. Roesler edged his teammate by 3-2 decision.
West Fargo had one champion in their first trip to the Lions with nationally ranked senior Jared Franek. Franek was far and away the best 160 in Mandan on the weekend, winning by fall in all seven bouts over the course of the two days.
The other North Dakota Lions champion was 113 Reece Barnhardt of Bismarck St. Mary’s Central. Barnhardt continued his dominance at the weight this season by upending RC Stevens wrestler Cody Stockman 14-5.
