Bismarck native Ryan Blees, currently in his second season with Virginia Tech after transferring from Oklahoma State, won his 157 pound wrestleoff Friday evening over teammate BC LaPrade. Blees looked strong in all positions, scoring four takedowns including a beautiful left side hi-crotch in the closing seconds of the third period to cap a 10-3 victory.
Blees’ biggest competition for the weight is likely to come from true freshman Mekhi Lewis, who is projected to wrestle 157 pounds but competed against All American Davis McFadden at 165 in the dual. Lewis was impressive, falling to McFadden by 4-3 decision.
Virginia Tech’s first match is at home vs Stanford on November 4. Blees is likely to be in the lineup, and will have his shot at returning All American Paul Fox. Fox is currently ranked 13th by Flowrestling
