University of Mary Head wrestling coach Adam Aho has been waiting for this season since he arrived on campus five years ago. When he took the job at Mary, there was talk about the potential for a new athletics complex that would include major upgrades to the wrestling facilities. In the Spring of 2016, Mary broke ground on a new student center that did just that. The Marauders now have new locker and practice rooms.
The locker rooms are all but ready for when students get to campus September 5, and will feature some great “blast for the past” imagery of the Marauder wrestling hay day from the mid 1990’s. Right outside the locker room door is a mural of the 1994 Marauder wrestling team that finished third at the NAIA national championship under legendary head coach Milo Trusty. Members of the 1994 team that are now enshrined outside of the locker room include 2X national champions Kerry Boumans and Mike Seeger, national champion Jim Cudney, and All Americans Mo Johnson and Darin Synhorst.
“One of the biggest strengths of our program is the history, and I felt it was very important to give credit to the alumni that put this program on the map,” Aho stated. “We wanted to make sure that our current team understands what those guys accomplished and look to them for motivation during training.”
The wrestling room isn’t quite complete, but brand new practice mats have arrived and the room should be finished in early October. The old practice room was snug, with about one full mat of space. The new room will feature significantly more mat space as well as some other fresh features.
“The room will also offer an open ceiling for ropes and other circuit-based training options,” Aho said. “There will also be a nice sound system and television for match review right inside the wrestling room.
The rooms’s location will also allow wrestlers to warm up away from the competition arena to allow for more focused match preparation.
Official NCAA wrestling practice begins October 10, but you can see a preview of this years squad at the Dean Walker Memorial Throwdown September 30, 12:00 PM in the MDU Resources Community Bowl parking lot.
