With the North Dakota State tournament now over a month in the rearview, a lot of North Dakota’s best prep wrestlers are taking to the mat in national competition all over the country. Last weekend, it was West Fargo 3X state champion Jesse Shearer competing in Virginia Beach, VA at the NHSCA Senior nationals.
This weekend, Shearer’s Packer teammate Jared Franek will take to the mat in the 152 pound weight bracket at Flonationals, where he will run into some serious competition from national power states including Pennsylvania, Illinois, Ohio, and New York. Currently, Franek ranks sixteenth in the nation by Flowrestling, and the only other ranked competitor in the field is #8 Jaden Mattox of Ohio. Mattox was a runner-up in Ohio this season and will enter the tournament as the top seed, with Franek seeded second. Other preseeded state champions in the bracket include three seed Hunter Richard (NY), Edmond Ruth (PA), Danny Braunagel (IL), and Kolin Leyrer (MI). Flonationals can be followed live with a FloPro pass at FloWrestling.com. Action begins Friday at noon Eastern.
Team North Dakota also has three High Schoolers competing in the USA Wrestling Folkstyle National Tournament in Cedar Falls, IA this weekend. This event is the first leg of the USA Wrestling triple crown that will conclude and the Freestyle and Greco national championships in Fargo this July. Wrestling begins tomorrow with live video provided my Trackwrestling, and with the following North Dakotans entered into the high school divisions:
Drew Steidler Matpac Cadet 126
Andrew Miller Napoleon Cadet 285
Devin Steidler Matpac Cadet 152
A group of 9-10 graders are also competing this weekend in the AAU 9-10 Grade National Duals under the team names “Team Prime” and “Nature Boys”. The dual tournament begins Saturday morning and will continue into Sunday. This tournament is also available to watch for a fee through Trackwrestling.
