Minot Sophomore Kelby Armstrong finished Day 1 and the NHSCA Sophomore Nationals 3-0 and needs one more win to gain All American honors. Armstrong scored a major decision and a pin in the first two rounds before upending Virginia’s Brandon Crowder 7-4. In that match, Armstrong started slowly, giving up a go-behind and rideout to fall into an 0-2 hole after the first period. Crowder also scored the only point in the second period with an escape to make the score 3-0 entering the third. In the third, Armstrong scored a quick reversal and three nearfall to take a 5-3 lead. After Crowder eventually escaped, Armstrong held position and scored a takedown on Crowders’s last second throw attempt. In tomorrow’s quarterfinal round, Armstrong will meet Pennsylvania’s Kurtis Phipps. Phipps is the top seed in the bracket and has yet to be scored on.
Napoleon 2X state champion Garret Jangula dropped a round of 32 match to Pennsylvania’s Dylan Reinhart 5-0, and will attempt to All American through the consolation side tomorrow. The same can be said for Bismarck High state champion Devin Steidler. Wrestling in the senior division, Steidler won his first three matches before dropping a round of 16 match by fall to Crew Fullerton of New York.
