Bismarck’s Sophia Smith finished 5-2 at Cadet Folkstyle Nationals in Oklahoma City, OK today. Smith finished in fifth place at 112 pounds, and in doing so became the first North Dakota female to All American at Folkstyle Nationals. Day one of the tournament started on the wrong foot for Smith, as she had a first round bye before falling to California’s Danielle Garcia 4-2. On the backside, Smith put together three wins in a row to ensure All American status.
On day two, the Century High School freshman defeated last year’s 105 pound national champion in a tight 2-1 decision to make the consolation semi, where she again fell to Garcia. This time around, Smith gave up a reversal in the closing seconds of the match and fell 6-4. Smith won her fifth place bout 6-0.
This evening begins the Junior Folkstyle competition, where Smith will look to grab double All American honors.
