Clayton Grueneich Finishes Season as Class B’s Only Undefeated Wrestler

Junior Clayton Grueneich of Edgeley-Ellendale-Kulm was quietly one of the most dominant wrestlers of the North Dakota high school the season.  He and Class A state champion Brandon Metz were the only wrestlers in the state to finish the season undefeated, and Grueneich won his title in style, defeating Velva’s Justin Helseth by 13-3 major decision.  Over the course of the season, Grueneich recorded only one of his 37 wins by decision, a 5-1 victory over Helseth in the semifinals of the Central Cass Lettermen’s.  Of Grueneich’s 22 falls, the most impressive was his 5:06 fall over Jake Erckenback of New York Mills, who is currently ranked sixth in Class A Minnesota.  Grueneich is only a Junior, and will return to both the Gridiron (where he rushed for over 300 yards in the Class A title game) and wrestling mat looking for back to back state titles next year.
