Last season, Turtle Mountain’s Dawson Zerr held a lead all the way through his state semifinal bout before giving up a late Hail Mary heartbreaker that took away his chance at a state title. This season, Zerr kept that loss in the back of his mind, wrestling one match at a time and not looking ahead. The move paid off, as the Junior capped a dominant 34-4 season with a 7-2 win over Bismarck’s Jaden Petit-Scmidt in the state finals. It has been a long journey to the top for Zerr, who wrestled for Grand Forks Red River in the eighth grade before relocating to Turtle Mountain as a freshman. Zerr will return as an important leader to the Braves next season with an eye on title number two.
